How to Get the WhatsApp Blue Tick Verification

Some customers hesitate to interact with a business on WhatsApp because they are unsure if it is legit. The official business account (OBA) status or blue tick badge on WhatsApp resolves this problem by solidifying the credibility of your brand. It makes prospects trust your brand and connect with you over the platform.

Let’s go through a step-by-step guide to understand how you can earn that blue badge.

Why Get an Official Business Account Status

Apart from the badge in their profiles, brands with OBA status have their names displayed in the chat list, contacts view, and chat screens instead of their phone number, even if the user hasn’t saved the business information in their contacts.

This is WhatsApp's way of reassuring the user that your brand has met all their eligibility checks and is recognized as an authentic and reputable business.

What Do You Need To Gain The OBA Status?

Meta has various criteria to approve a business’ request for blue tick verification. We’ll break them down for you:

Adhering to WhatsApp’s Policies & Meta Business Verification

To be recognized as an official business, your brand needs to comply with the WhatsApp Commerce and Business Messaging Policies.

You also have to get your Meta business account or business portfolio verified by updating your legal business name, address, phone number, and website and following the necessary steps.

Notability Criteria

Understanding the difference between authenticity and notability can be quite confusing.

Authenticity confirms if your business is real and not a bot or fake account, while notability evaluates your brand’s presence offline or on Meta itself. This includes mentions of your brand in online news articles by reputed publications that have a large audience.

Here’s where it gets tricky though—Meta does not consider paid or promotional content as sources for review for notability. So this rules out business listings and paid ads.

Since Meta evaluates the notability of the display name you input, if you want to change it after receiving the OBA status, they will reassess the new display name for notability and display name compliance.

Just because one phone number in your WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) gets the blue badge doesn’t mean all numbers will automatically get approved. Each number with a different display name is reviewed separately.

If your WABA has a main parent brand that meets notability requirements, you can make the approval process easier for sub-brands. Update their display names to follow this format: {{sub-brand name}} by {{notable name}}'. This helps Meta recognize the connection between your brands and improves your chances of approval.

2-Factor Authentication

Getting the blue tick isn’t just about ticking off boxes—it’s also about securing your account. To qualify for OBA status, your WhatsApp Business Account needs to have 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) enabled.

How to Apply for the OBA Status?

  1. Visit Meta Business Manager and select the WhatsApp business accounts option.

  2. Choose the account you want to submit for the blue badge, then go to the WhatsApp Manager by clicking on the option in the bottom right corner.

  1. Click on the settings icon on the right

  1. You will be redirected to the WhatsApp Business Account settings; click on the profile option and update the necessary details.

  1. Once you’ve entered all the details, you can click on the “Submit Request” button. The WhatsApp Business Support Team can take up to 7 days to review your request and approve or deny it.

  2. You can submit up to 5 supporting links to show that the business is notable. But remember, these can’t be from your own website.

Denied Requests

Sometimes WhatsApp might deny your request for various reasons. If that happens, don’t worry; you can reapply in 30 days.

During this time, you can work on building your notability in news articles and popular magazines.

Things to Remember

If you want to improve your chances of getting approved without any hassle, don’t forget to,

  • Make sure the name on your website matches the WhatsApp Business Account’s display name.

  • Have clear information about your services and products on the website.

  • Prepare a minimum of 3 external media coverage links from newspapers, magazines, and other reputable sources. Articles older than 12 months are invalid.

  • Strengthen your social media presence, specifically Facebook and Instagram.

  • Add the number of employees and profitability to improve your chances.

  • Have the 2-step verification for the phone number configured.
